Hello everyone,
I recently made a TikTok/YouTube video about this protein skimmer, but I wanted to drop a detailed thread here for anyone looking to dig a bit deeper.
First off, full disclosure: I’d consider myself a "below-average" fishkeeper when it comes to technical gear. I’m not here to give you a polished, corporate-style review—just my honest experience as a regular hobbyist.
The Cons:
Tight Adjustment Knobs: The control knobs for the inlet and outlet are pretty stiff, and there are no clear markings showing which way opens or closes them. You have to get a feel for it through trial and error, which took me longer than I’d like to admit.
Microbubbles: It definitely spits out a bit of microbubbles. No matter where I set the control knobs, it still puts off bubbles. From other videos I’ve watched, this seems to be standard for this unit. It’s a little unsightly, but as long as the skimmer works, it’s not a dealbreaker for me.
The Pros:
Super Easy Setup: Right out of the box, assembly took maybe 5 minutes without even looking at the manual. Major kudos to them for keeping it straightforward.
Pulls Gunk Immediately: Right after turning it on, it immediately started pulling waste. I was skeptical at first because most online reviews say it takes about two weeks to break in.
Now, to be fair, I don’t have it properly dialed in yet, so it might be over-skimming. But before installing it, my tank was a bit cloudy—I had just glued down a bunch of new corals using epoxy, which always hazes the water. Plus, my tank was due for a deep clean, so all that foam might genuinely just be months of built-up organics finally getting removed.
Update:
By the next day, the collection cup was completely full. While watching my video back at work, I realized something: the skimmer is sitting right above my Dragon's Breath macroalgae. It’s very possible the pump is actually pulling in pieces of the macroalgae! I won't know for sure until I get home today and take a closer look, but I'll keep you posted.
All that said, I’d say it definitely works—my tank was noticeably crystal clear by the morning.
